Done With Bloglines (So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish)

I was a Bloglines user for several years.  I liked the old-school frame interface and it generally met all of my needs to keep up to date with the hundreds of feeds I read regularly.

Recently, Bloglines released a Beta of their new feed reader.  It uses lots of AJAX and is significantly different than the classic version.  Since this will entail learning a new web-based feed reader, I thought it would be a good time to check out Google Reader.  So I exported my OPML and gave it a try.

First impressions are very good. I like the interface and keyboard shortcuts a lot. So.. now I'm hooked and it is the feed reader I will use going forward.

The only gripe I have is that Google Reader doesn't display the Favicon (little graphic icon) next to each feed.  All you get is a generic blue icon.  What's up with that?

Been using Google for over a year now with my feeds - been great.

The boon to me is how google stores the info on their server and not locally (not familiar with bloglines, but I used to use a local app), so if I am away and not able to check for a week, all the info fed out over that period is captured for my return :)

The one thing they have released I am actually happy about (and you get used to the lack of Favicons after awhile)

Is there anything specific about the new beta you don't like?

@Tony:

yeah, love the web-based reader as well. Bloglines is also web-based and offers similar functionality.

@Bjorn

I have actually never tried the new Beta. Here is my reasoning for a switch.

I have been hearing how great Google Reader is. It gets lots of great reviews. I stuck with Bloglines because I was generally happy with the simple frame-based application. However, in the past few months it has been having lots of problems. I get server errors often when I try to read a feed... I get slow load times.. etc.

So.. since the beta is coming out, I am going to have to switch to an AJAX-y interface anyways. Since I have to make a switch, it is a good time to move to Google Reader.

The other item I like (which I am not sure if you can do this with the other readers as easily) is the "foldering" of feeds to bunch like with like

I use to use Bloglines too, but it was annoying me too much. One particluar thing I didn't like is that once visiting a folder of feeds they were then all marked as read, regardless whether I read them or not.

I use Google Reader now too and it works a treat.
